Skived heat sinks have excellent thermal performance compared to other manufacturing methods because it provides thin fin heat sinks with dense uniform shapes and distributed fins. Since skived heat sinks are made from a single piece of material, such as copper or aluminum, additional interfacial resistance is common in other heat sink manufacturing processes, such as stamped or folded fins, which have thermal resistance using solder to connect the fins. The combination of this high aspect ratio thin fin with a thermally free interface results in optimal cooling performance in high airflow applications
skived radiators are made using a skiving machine that uses a blade to slice the material and then push the skived fins up. For heat sink applications, ultra-thin fins can be fabricated, and we produce fins as thin as 0.008". The process allows for high aspect ratios, which provide greater surface area for maximum heat dissipation. We typically use this process for copper skiving Heatsinks, but aluminum skiving is possible. Since this is easy to set up, it is usually the least expensive to set up and can quickly prototype new designs. After the scraping process is complete, additional features can be machined, but experience is required to avoid stress on the heatsink
Identifying a skived radiator is fairly easy because the radiator has a curve and the blade completes the cut at the bottom of the radiator as shown. Also, the fins are not perfectly vertical, there is a slight curvature. This is more pronounced as the fins get taller. The typical width of a heatsink is 200mm, but heatsinks up to 400mm wide can be made by rotating a block of material and running a second pass with the opposite fin curvature. Since skived heatsinks are made from long blocks of material, the only thing that puts no real limit on heatsink length is the length of the block. Different heights can be achieved by machining blocks of material. Any excess material is recycled to reduce waste. Typical finishes for aluminum skived heat sinks are anodizing or nickel plating. Typical finishes for copper skived heat sinks are oxidation resistance or nickel plating.
